Psyence BioMed secures exclusive U.S. ibogaine license
Texas Ibogaine Research Corporation to lead U.S. ibogaine drug development.
Psyence BioMed Ltd. has announced a significant step in its ibogaine drug development strategy by securing exclusive U.S. rights through its subsidiary, Texas Ibogaine Research Corporation (TIRC). The agreement, which is still subject to a definitive contract expected by November 30, 2026, grants TIRC the ability to develop, supply, and distribute Psyence Labs' pharmaceutical-grade ibogaine in the United States.
What the agreement entails
According to RTT News, TIRC will gain exclusive access to Psyence Labs' manufacturing expertise, cultivation techniques, and technical data concerning pharmaceutical-grade ibogaine hydrochloride. Psyence Labs will serve as the exclusive supplier and wholesale distributor for TIRC in the U.S., while retaining rights in other markets. In return, TIRC will make milestone payments totaling up to $1.3 million for the first drug candidate, along with an annual exclusivity fee and royalties on net sales.
Regulatory and clinical implications
The agreement marks a strategic move for Psyence BioMed as it aims to establish a U.S. platform for regulated ibogaine development. TIRC, formed earlier this month, will spearhead the regulatory strategy and development efforts for future ibogaine-based drug candidates in the U.S. Although the deal does not immediately advance a clinical-stage program, it provides Psyence BioMed with crucial access to pharmaceutical-grade ibogaine and related intellectual property.
Why it matters
Ibogaine is a naturally derived psychoactive compound that has garnered increasing interest for its potential in treating addiction and mental health conditions. However, significant clinical and regulatory hurdles remain before it can be commercialized in the U.S. This agreement positions Psyence BioMed to potentially overcome these challenges by securing a foothold in the U.S. market.
Psyence BioMed's stock responded positively to the news, rising 7% in pre-market trading, despite closing down 5.12% the previous day.
Future prospects
The definitive agreement, expected by late 2026, will be crucial for TIRC's role in leading U.S. regulatory and development efforts. This move aligns with Psyence BioMed's broader strategy to expand its presence in the emerging field of ibogaine-based therapies.
Psyence BioMed's recent actions, including a reverse stock split earlier this year, indicate a focused approach to strengthening its market position.
